Lungren Says CA Court Decision Overturns Will of the People |
|
May 16, 2008 |
Congressman Dan Lungren issued the following statement condemning yesterday's judicial overreach by the California Supreme Court which overturned the will of the people of California who voted in 2000 to define marriage as being between one man and one woman:
“From coast to coast, from Massachusetts to California, courts have taken away the people’s right to decide how they should be governed. This decision by the California Supreme Court is an astounding example of judicial fiat from the bench. This is a decision that should concern not only those who hold traditional values regarding marriage, but also anyone who believes in the rule of law and a representative form of government.” |

"In this regard, it is critical that action by the Congress must be responsive to the underlying crisis itself. At a time when Americans are hurting, the House of Representatives was presented with a bill which would have bailed out investors who willingly and knowingly purchased securities that were cobbled together from mortgages that were poorly underwritten. H.R. 3221 would transfer risks that should be borne by lenders and investors to American taxpayers who have already been victimized by irrational market speculation. Furthermore, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) pointed out the inordinate cost of the system.
